The UK’s motorists are back in black, according to new statistics that reveal the most popular car colours chosen in 2017.

Black replaces white as the UK’s favourite car colour choice, with white – which has been the most popular shade for the past four years – dropping to third spot behind grey.

It’s a close run contest though, with monochrome cars accounting for almost six out of every 10 cars sold in the UK. Black cars represented 20.3%, or more than one in five, of the cars sold in Britain in 2017. Grey cars accounted for 19.7% and white 19.0% of the 2.54 million total.

Blue was the fourth most popular choice, accounting for 16% of new car colours, meaning that the top four hues represented three quarters of all the cars sold here last year.

But whilst black was top of the tree overall, the country’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta, was most popular in blue, as was Ford’s second most popular model (and the UK’s third), the Focus. The nation’s second best seller, the Vokswagen Golf, was most popular in grey, with the first car to sell more in black than any other colour being the Nissan Qashqai, which was fourth in the sales charts.

Red, which was once the most popular choice of colour for new cars, dropped out of the top five for the first time ever, coming in behind silver and accounting for less than 10% of new colour choices, whilst green, orange, bronze and yellow made up the rest of the top 10, albeit with the gap between sixth (red) and seventh (green) places being over 220,000 cars.

As for future tips, while bronze made its first ever entry into the top 10, the colour that grew fastest in terms of popularity was gold, which saw a 19.1% upswing in popularity in 2017, although it till only accounted for 0.2% of the market. Even so, it could well be an indicator of changing fashions, especially as brown, which was in the top 10 until recently, saw a 33.2% decline in popularity over the course of the year.
