Nissan reveals all-electric racecar – Leaf Nismo RC

The racer comes with two electric motors to develop 321bhp and 640Nm of torque, and harks back to the original model from 2011

Nissan has revealed the new version of the Leaf Nismo RC all-electric racing car. Unveiled at the Nissan Crossing in Tokyo, the Nismo features two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a streamlined yet aggressive bodykit.

The two 120kW motors are mounted at opposite ends of the chassis to provide four-wheel drive and together develop 321bhp and 640Nm of torque for instantaneous acceleration and impressive performance.

Nissan claims it can go from 0-60mph in just 3.2 seconds – 50 per cent faster than the 2011 version – but the Japanese brand hasn’t confirmed how fast it can go.

The stylish is also markedly different to that of the standard Leaf, as the racecar comes with a lower slung body, LED head and taillights, silver and black bodywork with red detailing and a restyled grille.

Weighing just 1,220kg, the Leaf Nismo features a carbon-fibre monocoque and other lightweight components.

Nissan executive vice president and head of global marketing, sales and electric vehicles, Daniele Squillaci, said: “The all-new Leaf Nismo RC shows how we’re setting our sights even higher when it comes to raw power and performance – making electric vehicles even more exciting for customers.

“It’s our most thrilling expression yet of the philosophy of Nissan Intelligent Mobility.”

Nissan will be showing the model as part of the annual Nismo festival on December 2 alongside the Nissan Formula E car. Both cars will be pushed to the limit at the Fuji Speedway Circuit.
