Five years after the first concept was revealed, BMW has finally unveiled the production version of the i8 Roadster.
Coming with a soft-top folding roof and two seats, the output of the electric motor has been upped considerably to 140bhp – meaning an overall power outage of 368bhp when paired with the three-cylinder petrol engine.
The electric drive system can function on its own up to 74mph – a 43mph increase on the previous i8 system – and has a range of 33 miles, meaning cleaner zero-emission driving for longer.
The main draw of the i8 line-up is its lower emissions and more economical outlook, and the new version is no different as emissions are quoted as low as 46g/km CO2 and fuel economy as high as 135mpg for the Roadster.
Although there are multiple similarities between the Roadster and Coupe models, the convertible has received special tuning for the dampers, springs and dynamic stability control so that it can cope with the less-rigid structure.
Inside it comes with multiple premium features including the top-end touchscreen infotainment system with iDrive control, BMW’s drive assistant with surround view, ConnectedDrive Services and sports seats.
Other features include 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels and Roadster designation on the C-Pillar are fitted as standard – with optional extras such as a head-up display, trim materials and new metallic body colours.
The new BMW i8 is currently priced at £124,730, both the Roadster and the updated version of the Coupe will go on sale in January 2018.
