The 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS is the third generation of the premium coupe model, and takes into account the brand’s new styling and technology.
Including some of the latest accessories fitted to top-end models, the CLS is due to bring more of the recognisable Mercedes quality that its models are renowned for.
But what are the main features of the new version, and why should you consider it if you’re in the market?
1. Its cabin is luxurious and bang up to date
What Mercedes does well is ensure that drivers and passengers are more than comfortable when using its vehicles, and the new CLS is no different. Coming with leather upholstery and lots of interior space, it should be well up there with other Mercedes models in terms of indulgence. This is also the first CLS to have five seats, so it’s more practical too.
Another bonus is the standard widescreen cockpit, which combines two 12.3-inch screens that goes from the instrument binnacle all the way to the edge of the passenger seat. The screen in the binnacle is fully customisable to suit the driver’s needs, and alongside the central display, they are controlled by a touchpad in the stream-lined dashboard.
2. It comes with a mild-hybrid option
Coming with a new range of six-cylinder engines, the highlight and most powerful is the 3.0-litre petrol is paired to an EQ Boost 48V electric power system. Adding 22bhp to the 362bhp produced by the engine, the electric system not only enhances the performance of the engine, it also helps save fuel by taking over with some acceleration and deactivating the engine during a cruise. It also recuperates energy from braking so that it is more efficient.
As well as helping drive the car it can take care of some of the vehicle’s accessories and features – helping save even more fuel.
The other power options are derived from the same 3.0-litre diesel engine, with 281bhp and 335bhp versions available to customers.
3. All models get four-wheel drive
To help with stability and outright performance, all three engine choices are paired with 4Matic all-wheel drive and multi-link suspension to promote a more comfort-based drive from base spec. Air suspension can be fitted as an optional extra, which brings adaptive damping to the setup and means further comfort, as it can soak up the bumps more efficiently.
4. The CLS has S-Class tech on hand
The flagship of the range is the ideal place to grab technology from, and from the S-Class come some of the top safety features on the market. Active brake assist, lane keeping assist, attention assist, speed limit assist and the Pre-Safe occupant safety system all come as standard with the CLS.
The optional Driving Assistance Plus package adds some of the top features like active distance control, active steering assist, evasive steering assist, blind spot assist, lane keeping assist and Pre-Safe Plus. These combine to help make the CLS one of the most advanced cars on the road.
Another cool feature is that the CLS uses the camera and radar systems along with navigation data to see how the driver is behaving and suggest assistance systems if they are needed.
5. Business users will like its ‘In-Car Office’ feature
If you are the sort of person that needs to be connected at all times, the CLS has a great feature for you. The In-Car Office feature can place you in conference calls and detect locations from calendar events so it can remind you where to go and when. If you need to get into a conference call, the car’s system will detect the PIN you need and automatically input it so you don’t have to be distracted.
